If you visit FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, AL, you get to see the records on Rick Hall's office walls, and all but one of them are platinum. Those records aren't door prizes. Hall did not care to pay for the extra level of recognition. The only platinum record on the late music mogul's wall is "One Bad Apple" by The Osmonds. It got so popular so fast that he didn't notice it had sold 500,000 copies. The moral of the story is that "platinum anything" is a capitalist upsell. It is never anything else.
