I’ve never been a part of the “gay community”—not just ideologically, but in that I never frequented clubs, bars, and other places specifically to meet other gays. This could be partly because I’ve been with my partner since I was a teenager but, even if I hadn’t been, I don’t think specifically gay spaces would have been a big part of my life. Despite that, I have of course come to know many other gay people as I’ve simply gone about my life. Of those people, only a handful have been lesbians and, in my limited sample, they ended up identifying as men at an alarmingly high rate.
